CyberLink PowerDVD 20

In case some new readers have not known much about the software, we will introduce PowerDVD simply. Then we will give an overall review of PowerDVD 20.

What is CyberLink PowerDVD

Over the years, PowerDVD is been the world’s best Blu-ray movie and media player. It is also the only product on the planet that can play commercial Blu-ray disc legally, if you care about these things. PowerDVD will launch a new version every year. It is now 2020, so the most recent version is PowerDVD 20, which is able to play 1080P/4K UHD Blu-ray disc, BDMV folder, Blu-ray ISO file, DVD, and 3D DVD on your Windows computer. With its unique TrueTheater enhancements, you will have an amazing visual and audio experience. Please note that PowerDVD only has a Windows version.

Some other features you can pay attention to is that it upgrades native 64-bit engine for video, audio & photo playback. It adds full support for 8K video playback on TV mode. In addition, it can apply the unique TrueTheater color, lighting & HDR for 4K video. It also adds spatial audio support for watching 360° video, including YouTube 360 videos.

Review for PowerDVD’s Main Features and Designing Concept

Two Modes: PC Mode and TV Mode

Once I first start running PowerDVD, there’s a window pop up for me to choose from “PC Mode” and “TV Mode”. TV mode is for people who want to enjoy movies or other entertainments on the big screen TV. You will need to use an HDMI or VGA cable to connect your computer with TV.

There is another easier way. If you own a streaming device like Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, or Roku that has connected with your television under the same Wi-Fi environment as your computer, you can enter the “PC Mode” and click on the “Play to” icon to stream video, photo, audio from computer to TV. PowerDVD has good compatibility with all these streaming devices.

Innovative Interface

The interface of PowerDVD is quite different from other Blu-ray players or media players I have seen. The media players on the marketplace are most often exist a button to load the target media files you are about to watch from Windows Explorer. PowerDVD takes the opposite designing concept. It integrates the Windows Explorer on the left-hand panel. You can see all the media files on your Windows computer except the system files.

PowerDVD allows users to set up their media libraries. That means, you can specify the media folders yourself and PowerDVD will auto-import the media files in these folders. That is very organized to manage your media files.

Excellent Quality for Blu-ray, DVD and Video Playback

The ability to play Blu-ray with excellent quality is the major selling point of PowerDVD. Benefiting from its relationship with BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association), PowerDVD is the only authorized Blu-ray player software on the PC front to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

I have tried VLC media player and Potplayer to check video quality results. Personally speaking, PowerDVD is the best among these excellent media players. Thanks to its TrueTheater enhancements, the color is more vivid and the picture details are more outstanding. If your disc includes HDR (high dynamic range) information, they can look noticeably better with PowerDVD’s TrueTheater HDR enhancements.

Enable PowerDVD TrueTheater

The source audio output from PowerDVD is the best in the industry. The DTS multi-channel surround sound and even AC-3 Dolby sound like you are really in a movie theatre.

Play 3D Blu-ray/DVD/Regular Video

PowerDVD can not only play 3D media in 3D but also upscale regular 2D media to 3D. Even if your computer screen is not a 3D display, you can convert 2D video to “Anaglyph Red/Cyan Mode” and enjoy the 3D video with a pair of red/cyan 3D glasses.

Upscale Regular 2D Media to 3D

There are countless media players on the marketplace, what makes PowerDVD stand out is the support for 4K UHD Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, original Blu-ray folder/ISO file playback, and its enhancements for video/audio quality. With certain technical thresholds, PowerDVD is difficult to be surpassed by other products for the time being. It’s still the world’s NO.1 movie player. But you be the judge, download the trial version, compare with other products and see for yourself.
